Catalogue layout is a time consuming process and companies will have to
employ a full time designer through the year laying out the text, collecting the
pictures and entering the data. Thankfully, inflation is very low at
present so prices don't need to change so regularly.
A simple rule of thumb is that page count must be divisible by 4. Blank
pages could be inserted but they look unprofessional.
Many companies will, by now, have several versions of their catalogue, at least
a printed version and an online version... the latter often as a pdf that can be
downloaded; this isn't as accessible though as a fully electronic version such
as ours at

Catalogue Printing
Manufacturing costs of a catalogue are determined by the sheet size
of the press; the bigger presses keep the costs down for bigger print
runs; on the other hand large print companies won't be interested in a
smaller companies print needs. Catalogue manufacture involves a lot of
handling in the form of folding and binding. The unit costs can be kept
down if these are mechanised. Expect a longer turnaround time on a
catalogue, the manufacturing process will be time consuming and print
cost will be reduced by using an continental Europe or far eastern
production plant.
